CONSUMER PRICE INDEX In South Africa, the Consumer Price Index or CPI measures changes in the prices paid by consumers for a basket of goods and services. In terms of our agreement mentioned above, an average is used. Traditionally, the CPI for the calendar year (Jan – Dec) is used. The CPI for the annual year of 2022 is expected to be 6.9%.
APPLICATION FOR THOSE AT TOP OF THEIR SCALE The whole salary scale must be adjusted with the full % negotiated increase, so that those at the top of their scale, also move with the scale and receive the full % as a pensionable increase.
APPLICATION FOR OUTLIERS Those who are remunerated way above the scale, should get the CPI and any additional % as a once off payment.
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE ITEMS Traditionally, the NTEU Salary negotiations team invited you to submit conditions of service-related suggestions for inclusion in the salary demand. The Salary Negotiations Team reflected on this and sadly, the union has not had much success if any, in negotiating the enhancement of existing conditions nor the addition of new conditions of service as included with the salary demand. Nothing prevents members from putting such items forward and we invite you to do so again.
