As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) campaign, the NTEU branch at the Nelson Mandela University celebrated Nelson Mandela Day by visiting two life-changing organisations in Gqeberha

NTEU visited Isithembiso Babies Home and EP Child and Youth Centre. During these visits on 20 July 2022, NTEU offered support and donated 200 x 5 Litres of bottled water to the two respective organisations.

Since 2005, Isithembiso has provided a safe, healthy, and loving family environment for abandoned or orphaned babies between birth and 3 years old. Isithembiso exists so that hope can exist for abandoned or orphaned babies. They provide a stable environment for young lives that have had a difficult start, and their aim is always to see the babies placed in loving, secure families.

The Eastern Province Child and Youth Care Centre was founded in 1889 and is the oldest centre of its kind in the Nelson Mandela Metropole, Eastern Cape. In 1905, they moved into their present premises in Lennox Street, Glendenningvale, Gqeberha. The Centre accommodate approximately 96 children of all races between the ages of 4 and 18 years of age. In addition to offering residential care, the toddlers attend Haas Das Educare Centre and whilst other learners attend 11 different schools in their immediate community. The children receive structured study time and tutoring support. Recreational and stimulation activities, therapeutic and psychological support is also provided to our children. Two social workers provide counselling and support services to the children. Children visit their biological or host families on a regular basis with the aim of reuniting the child with a family in a community. Basic health care services are provided to the children to ensure healthy development and care.

NTEU’s offered a message of care and hope to these organisations by making a small donation during the water crisis our communities are currently facing. We hope to inspire others in the Metro to make similar donations. For more information, contact: Ms Vuyelwa Jacobs (+27) 73 242 3800 Mr Jako Nel (+27) 79 226 2838
