The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) summarily condemns the murder of Mboneli Vesele, who gave his life in service of protecting the Vice Chancellor of Fort Hare University, Prof Sakhele Buhlungu. Human capital remains the essence of our higher institutes of learning and the loss of any life will be felt throughout the institution, and in fact the sector.

NTEU and its members mourn the loss of Mr Vesele, and have offered our condolences to his loved ones.

We have also conveyed our condolences to the VC as well as our commitment to continue to fight for the eradication of corruption at the institution. Now, with conditions having reached critical mass, the responsibility rests with the VC to adress the long-standing issues prevailing at the institution and create an environment for people to speak up without fear.

In this regards, NTEU, and its members, are ready to both speak up and come alongside the VC in the clean-up efforts of this prestigious university. However, this is a period of mourning and reflection on the life of cde Vesele. We need to ensure that his family and the university community has the space necessary to both mourn this great loss and to honour his life.

So, to avoid the perception of political capitalisation of a tragedy, NTEU will not be meeting with the Minister during his visit to the university today. “We do not believe the timing is correct. Instead, let’s take time to come to grips with this tragic loss.” Said Grant Abbott, NTEU General Secretary. “We will engage fully within future proceedings when the timing is appropriate to do so. Right now we focus on Mr Vesele and the emotional well-being of the great Fort Hare community” added Abbott.
